Setting
A layout of the the town of Maycomb
The setting of To Kill a Mockingbird plays a crucial way in the ideas, themes and characters play out. Set in the fictional town of Maycomb County, the story begins to evolve. Unlike the northern states of America in the 1930's, the southern states were in poverty, high rate of unemployment and many people were uneducated. The majority of the southern states were almost caught in their own world, with no television and newspapers from the outside coming irregualry many of the worl events that were occuring at the time were not mentioned, such as the rise of hitler. Alabama and surronding states had a very high popuation of negro's; this further fueled the rasicm.
Described in the book, Maycomb is self absurbed and isnt influenced by the progression of society around them, "A day was twenty-four hours long but seemed longer. There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County". (1.10) Not only the loocation of the county, but also the areas within the town, such as the school allow the author to give a broader aspect on other families and childre within the area.
